Maison Martin Margiela's elevates the simple lamp-from-a-bottle into an elegant lighting fixture. Here's how to make your own.
The Line 13 collection debuted at Milan's Salone del Mobile a while back, which inspired us to come up with a DIY budget version. To create your own lamp, find a pleasingly proportioned wine bottle and remove the top layer of the label so that only the white portion shows (the idea of the wine label, not the label itself, to mangle Wallace Stevens). You'll also need a lampshade and a lamp wiring kit, sources referenced below. For step-by-step instructions, see Make a Lamp from a Bottle at Instructables.
N.B.: For a more elegant solution, use a glass drill bit to drill a hole at the base of the bottle and run the cord through.

Above: Top the lamp with a simple white or black fabric shade (White Linen Drum Shade, $19.99; Black Linen Flat Lamp Shade, $24.99, both from Lamps Plus.) For the wiring, the Cork Stopper Lamp Kit ($17.94) is specifically designed to work with any standard wine bottle.
